Target Information
IL-5 is a cytokine that acts as a growth and differentiation factor for both B cells and eosinophils. It is a major regulator of eosinopoiesis, eosinophil maturation, and activation. Elevated IL-5 levels are associated with asthma and hypereosinophilic syndromes.
The IL-5 receptor is a heterodimer whose beta subunit is shared with the receptors for IL-3 and CSF2 (GM-CSF). IL-5, along with IL-4, IL-13, and CSF2, forms a cytokine gene cluster on chromosome 5 (5q31), regulated by long-range elements over 120 kilobases.
