Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to a small class of prenylated protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs), which contain a PTP domain and a characteristic C-terminal prenylation motif. PTPs are signaling molecules that regulate diverse cellular processes. This tyrosine phosphatase is primarily a nuclear protein but may associate with the plasma membrane depending on its C-terminal prenylation. Overexpression in mammalian cells confers a transformed phenotype, suggesting a role in tumorigenesis. Studies in rat indicate this gene may act as an immediate-early gene in mitogen-stimulated cells. PRL phosphatases promote cell proliferation by stimulating the G1 to S phase transition, and PRL-1 is implicated in regulating mitotic progression and spindle dynamics.
