Target Information

Specialized cells at the midline, which separates the left and right halves of the CNS, play roles in directing growth cone behavior. In vertebrate spinal cords, insect ventral nerve cords, and C. elegans, midline cells produce guidance cues such as nectins and slit, acting as attractants and repellents. Robo is an axon guidance receptor belonging to the Ig superfamily, conserved across species, and serves as a receptor for the repellent Slit. Non-crossing axons express high levels of Robo, while crossing axons express low levels before reaching the midline and high levels afterward. Robo1 and Robo2 are human homologs of the Drosophila protein Roundabout; Robo1 is homologous to C. elegans sax3, and Robo2 to zebrafish astray.
