Target Information
Muscarinic cholinergic receptor 2 (CHRM2) is an acetylcholine receptor that functions as a presynaptic autoreceptor inhibiting acetylcholine release. The M2 receptor also mediates smooth muscle contractility. In Alzheimer’s disease, selective loss of M2 subtype receptors occurs in cortical and hippocampal regions. Increased M2 receptor heterozygosity has been linked to depression in women. Expression of the M2 receptor has been reported in multiple brain regions (cerebellum, cortex, hippocampus, medulla, striatum, thalamus) as well as in lung and prostate tissues.
