Target Information
This gene belongs to the protocadherin alpha gene cluster, one of three related clusters tandemly linked on chromosome 5. These clusters exhibit a genomic organization similar to B-cell and T-cell receptor gene clusters.
The alpha cluster comprises 15 cadherin superfamily genes, including 13 highly similar and 2 distantly related coding sequences. Each gene contains large N-terminal variable exons encoding six cadherin ectodomains and shared C-terminal constant exons encoding the cytoplasmic domain.
These neural cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins are integral membrane proteins likely involved in specific cell-cell connections in the brain. Alternative splicing has been observed, and additional variants may exist but remain incompletely characterized.
