Connexins are the protein components of these junctions and vary by tissue type. They are named by molecular mass and categorized as alpha or beta based on sequence similarities. For example, CX43 is alpha-1, while CX32 and CX26 are beta-1 and beta-2, respectively. Connexins have four transmembrane domains, three intracellular, and two extracellular regions. Expression patterns vary by tissue and developmental stage, influencing processes such as embryo implantation.
