Target Information
In the intact cell, DNA closely associates with histones and other nuclear proteins to form chromatin. Chromatin remodeling is a critical component of transcriptional regulation, largely influenced by histone acetylation and deacetylation. Acetylation of lysine residues in histones increases DNA accessibility to transcription factors, while deacetylation is associated with transcriptional silencing. Mammalian HDAC8, isolated from human kidney, is a histone deacetylase that shares homology with other HDACs but exhibits distinct tissue distribution. It localizes to the nucleus and plays roles in tissue development and cancer etiology.
