ASL 유전자는 lyase 1 패밀리에 속하는 효소를 암호화합니다. 이 단백질은 세포질 내에서 동종 사량체(homotetramer)를 형성하며, 아르기노숙시네이트를 아르기닌과 푸마르산으로 가수분해하는 가역 반응을 촉매합니다. 이는 간에서 암모니아를 해독하는 요소 회로의 필수 단계입니다.
이 유전자의 돌연변이는 상염색체 열성 질환인 아르기노숙시닉산뇨증(argininosuccinic aciduria)을 유발합니다. 또한 염색체 22의 장완에는 비전사성 유사유전자(pseudogene)가 존재하며, 다양한 스플라이싱 변이체가 보고되어 있습니다.
