Target Information
This gene encodes the peroxisomal enzyme D-amino acid oxidase (DAO). The enzyme is a flavoprotein that uses flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) as its prosthetic group. It acts on various D-amino acids but is inactive on naturally occurring L-amino acids. Its biological function is not fully known; it may detoxify D-amino acids accumulated during aging. In mice, it degrades D-serine, a co-agonist of the NMDA receptor, and may be involved in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia.
