Target Information
This gene encodes coagulation factor XI of the blood coagulation cascade. It is present in plasma as a zymogen, existing as a homodimer of two identical polypeptide chains linked by disulfide bonds. Activation by factor XIIa cleaves internal peptide bonds, producing factor XIa, a serine protease composed of two heavy and two light chains. Activated factor XI triggers the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation by activating factor IX. Defects in this factor can lead to Rosenthal syndrome, a coagulation abnormality.
