Target Information
Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding integral membrane glycoprotein found in presynaptic vesicles of nearly all neurons. It has four transmembrane domains and forms a complex with dynamin under high calcium concentrations, suggesting a role in synaptic vesicle endocytosis. Synaptophysin also contributes to short-term and long-term synaptic plasticity regulation and is widely used as a marker for nerve terminals and neuroendocrine tumor differentiation. Mutations in the gene are associated with X-linked mental retardation.
