Target Information

Collagens are highly conserved proteins characterized by an uninterrupted Gly-X-Y triplet repeat.

• Collagen I: Found in most connective tissues; mutations cause osteogenesis imperfecta, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and idiopathic osteoporosis.
• Collagen II: Found in cartilage and vitreous humor; mutations linked to achondrogenesis, chondrodysplasia, and Kniest dysplasia.
• Collagen III: Found in extensible connective tissues such as skin, lung, and vascular system; mutations associated with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV and aneurysms.
• Collagen IV: Major component of basement membranes; composed of alpha 1(IV) and alpha 2(IV) chains (2:1 ratio). Useful in detecting basement membrane loss in carcinomas.
• Collagen V: Found in tissues containing Collagen I; regulates assembly of heterotypic fibers; mutations associated with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
