Target Information
iNOS (Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase, NOS) is an enzyme responsible for the production of nitric oxide (NO), a gaseous free radical that mediates various cellular functions such as vasorelaxation, neurotransmission, and cytotoxicity.
NO synthesis is catalyzed by the NOS family, including:
- nNOS (neuronal, type I)
- eNOS (endothelial, type III)
- iNOS (inducible, type II)
iNOS is expressed mainly in liver and can be induced by lipopolysaccharides and cytokines such as IFN-γ, TNF, IL-1, and IL-2.
It is found in macrophages, hepatocytes, synoviocytes, and smooth muscle cells.
After cytokine stimulation, iNOS shows delayed activation followed by sustained NO production.
Three related pseudogenes are located in the Smith-Magenis syndrome region on chromosome 17.
Dysfunction of iNOS is associated with diseases such as achalasia and impotence.
