Target Information
Sterol regulatory element-binding proteins (SREBPs) are transcription factors belonging to the basic helix-loop-helix leucine zipper family of DNA-binding proteins.
Three isoforms—SREBP-1a, SREBP-1c, and SREBP-2—have been identified in mammalian tissues, differing in structure, regulation, and function.
SREBPs exist as 120 kDa inactive precursors in the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. Upon activation, they translocate to the Golgi, undergo proteolytic cleavage, and form mature transcriptionally active fragments (60–78 kDa).
In liver and adipose tissue, SREBPs regulate lipid and cholesterol synthesis. SREBP-1 primarily controls triglyceride synthesis, while SREBP-2 is associated with cholesterol metabolism.
