Target Information
Agouti-related protein (AgRP), also known as agouti-related peptide, is a neuropeptide produced in the brain by AgRP/NPY neurons. In humans, the AgRP peptide is encoded by the AGRP gene, which acts as an antagonist of melanocortin-3 and melanocortin-4 receptors.
It regulates hypothalamic control of feeding behavior through melanocortin receptor and/or intracellular calcium signaling, playing a critical role in weight homeostasis. Mutations in this gene have been linked to late-onset obesity.
