Target Information
This gene encodes an enzyme that reversibly catalyzes the phosphorolysis of purine nucleosides. The enzyme is trimeric, consisting of three identical subunits. Mutations causing nucleoside phosphorylase deficiency lead to defective T-cell–mediated immunity and can affect B-cell immunity and antibody responses. Neurologic disorders may also occur in patients with immune defects. A polymorphism at amino acid position 51 that does not affect enzyme activity has been described. A pseudogene has been identified on chromosome 2.
