Target Information
Rotavirus is a double-stranded RNA virus in the family Reoviridae.
Five species of rotavirus (A–E) cause disease in animals, with species A being the most common in humans.
Within rotavirus A, different strains (serotypes) are classified based on two surface proteins.
Six viral structural proteins (VPs) form the virion, and six non-structural proteins (NSPs) are expressed in infected cells.
Rotavirus is the leading cause of severe diarrhoea among infants and young children, resulting in hundreds of thousands of deaths annually in developing countries.
