Target Information
Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to catecholamines, including dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. This O-methylation is a major degradative pathway for catecholamine neurotransmitters. COMT also plays an important role in the metabolism of catechol drugs used for hypertension, asthma, and Parkinson’s disease.
COMT exists in two forms: soluble (S-COMT) and membrane-bound (MB-COMT), differing at their N-termini. Several transcript variants are generated via alternative translation initiation sites and promoters.
