Target Information
Thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG), transthyretin, and albumin are responsible for transporting thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) in the bloodstream.
This gene encodes TBG, the major thyroid hormone transport protein in serum. It belongs to the serpin family but lacks inhibitory function typical of other serpins.
Mutations in this gene cause TBG deficiency, which can be partial, complete, or excessive depending on serum TBG levels.
Alternative splicing variants exist, though full-length sequences have not been fully determined.
