Target Information

CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and mediates cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. CD44 plays roles in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Expression can be upregulated in certain carcinomas, potentially related to metastatic potential. CD44 is found in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia of cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express CD44 at high levels, and peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation. The gene undergoes complex alternative splicing, generating multiple isoforms with distinct functions. CD44 dysfunction is associated with diseases such as superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and may be linked to tumor metastasis formation.
