Target Information
NCSTN (Nicastrin) encodes a type I transmembrane glycoprotein that is a key component of the multimeric gamma-secretase complex. This protein cleaves integral membrane proteins such as Notch receptors and beta-amyloid precursor protein and may act as a stabilizing cofactor for gamma-secretase assembly. The cleavage of beta-amyloid precursor protein produces amyloid beta peptide, a major component of neuritic plaques in Alzheimer’s disease. Mutations in NCSTN are associated with familial acne inversa. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 21.
