Histone은 전사 조절, DNA 수선, 복제 및 염색체 안정성 유지에 중심적인 역할을 합니다.
Histone H3의 N-말단 꼬리 부분은 다양한 번역 후 변형(post-translational modification)을 받을 수 있으며, 이는 크로마틴 구조 변화 또는 특정 전사인자 결합을 매개합니다.
이러한 변형에는 라이신 및 아르기닌 잔기에 대한 메틸화 또는 아세틸화, 세린 또는 트레오닌 잔기의 인산화가 포함됩니다.
