Target Information

IL-1 alpha (Interleukin-1 alpha) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is encoded by the IL1A gene located on chromosome 2q13 and signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1 beta.
IL-1 alpha plays a key role in innate host defense by inducing other proinflammatory cytokines and acute-phase responses. Its activity is moderated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA), which competitively inhibits receptor binding.
This cytokine is involved in immune regulation, inflammation, and hematopoiesis, and is produced as a proprotein processed upon cell injury to induce apoptosis. IL1A, along with other interleukin-1 family genes, forms a cytokine gene cluster on chromosome 2.
IL-1 alpha regulates NF-kappaB and MAPK pathways, stimulates IL-6 and COX-2 expression, and increases nitric oxide production. Elevated IL-1 alpha levels are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis.
