Target Information

Tmem119 encodes a single-pass type I transmembrane protein that interacts with various micro-RNAs and transcription factors such as SMAD1, SMAD5, and RUNX2.
It serves as a microglia-specific surface marker, distinguishing microglia from infiltrating macrophages. Microglial cells are brain-resident phagocytes involved in debris clearance and neuronal dendrite pruning, exhibiting functional plasticity in response to environmental changes.

Reactive microglia co-express Iba1 and can induce pathogenic A1 astrocytes via secretion of Cq1, IL-1a, and TNF upon LPS stimulation, contributing to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease, and Multiple Sclerosis.
Outside the nervous system, Tmem119 is implicated in osteoblast differentiation and ossification.
