Target Information
The Ferritin Light Chain gene encodes the light subunit of ferritin, the major intracellular iron storage protein in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Ferritin consists of 24 subunits of heavy and light chains, and variations in subunit composition affect iron uptake and release rates across tissues. Its main function is to store iron in a soluble and non-toxic form. Mutations in this gene are associated with neurodegenerative diseases and hyperferritinemia-cataract syndrome. Multiple pseudogenes are known.
