Target Information
The PAX gene family encodes transcription factors active in specific tissues during early embryonic development. Pax family members contain a DNA-binding domain known as the paired box, enabling them to regulate genetic programs. Several Pax genes are linked to developmental disorders—PAX3 (Waardenburg syndrome), PAX6 (Aniridia), and PAX2 (Wilms tumor).
During embryogenesis, PAX2 is expressed in the developing kidney, particularly in condensing metanephric mesenchyme and early epithelial structures derived from mesenchyme. PAX2 expression decreases as the tubular epithelium matures but persists in undifferentiated epithelial cells of Wilms tumors, correlating with cell proliferation. Expression of the Wilms tumor suppressor protein WT1 coincides with down-regulation of PAX2, suggesting that WT1 may directly repress PAX2 transcription.
