Target Information
Histones are basic nuclear proteins responsible for the nucleosome structure of chromosomal fiber in eukaryotes. Two molecules each of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4 form an octamer, around which approximately 146 bp of DNA is wrapped to form nucleosomes. The linker histone H1 interacts with linker DNA and contributes to higher-order chromatin compaction. The gene encoding histone H4 is intronless, lacks a polyA tail, and contains a palindromic termination element. It resides within the large histone gene cluster on chromosome 6.
