Target Information
PEDF (Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor) is a noninhibitory serpin with neurotrophic, anti-angiogenic, and anti-tumorigenic properties. It is a 50 kDa glycoprotein secreted in various tissues. PEDF induces apoptosis in proliferating endothelial cells and inhibits angiogenic factors such as VEGF and FGF-2. Its neuroprotective effects are mediated by suppression of neuronal apoptosis induced by oxidative or excitotoxic stress. PEDF interacts with a specific lipase-linked receptor (PEDF-R), facilitating signaling pathways unique among serpin family members. These properties suggest PEDF’s potential as a therapeutic agent for neurodegenerative and angiogenesis-related diseases, including AMD, PDR, and certain cancers.
