SERPINB6 단백질은 serpin superfamily 및 ovalbumin-serpin subfamily에 속합니다. 처음에는 태반의 thrombin 억제 인자로 발견되었으며, 생쥐에서 내이의 모세포에서 발현되는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 비증후성 진행성 난청과 관련되어 있으며, 세포 스트레스 시 리소좀 내용물 누출로부터 내이 세포를 보호하는 역할을 합니다. 대체 스플라이싱된 전사 변이체도 보고되었습니다.
