Target Information

CD103 (ITGAE, Integrin alpha E) is expressed on mucosa-associated T lymphocytes, activated cells, and subsets of TGF-β1 cells. It comprises a 150 kDa alpha chain and a 120 kDa beta chain, expressed by 0.5–2% of resting lymphocytes in peripheral blood and lymphoid organs. CD103 antibody stains a few bone marrow cells and, rarely, peripheral blood lymphocytes.

CD103 belongs to the integrin family—heterodimeric integral membrane proteins composed of alpha and beta chains. ITGAE encodes an I-domain-containing alpha integrin that undergoes post-translational cleavage, yielding disulfide-linked heavy and light chains. Together with beta 7 integrin, CD103 forms the E-cadherin-binding integrin known as the human mucosal lymphocyte-1 antigen. It is preferentially expressed in human intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) and may function in adhesion and IEL activation. CD103 dysfunction is associated with hairy cell leukemia and splenic marginal zone lymphoma.
