- Positive control: smooth muscle or leiomyosarcoma tissue recommended.
Target Information
Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of proteins, which are highly conserved and play key roles in cell motility, structure, and integrity.
Alpha, beta, and gamma actin isoforms have been identified:
- Alpha actin: major constituent of the contractile apparatus.
- Beta and gamma actins: involved in regulation of cell motility.
Smooth muscle actin is an alpha actin found in skeletal and smooth muscle, forming part of the cytoskeleton and interacting with myosin to assist in muscle contraction, cell motility, and cytokinesis.
It is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and can appear in fibroblastic stress fibers during wound healing and fibrocontractive diseases.
Mutations in the smooth muscle actin gene are associated with familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6.
Multiple alternatively spliced variants of smooth muscle actin have been identified.
