Target Information

Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, causing over 30,000 deaths annually in the USA. In early 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus was identified in Mexico and the United States, spreading rapidly worldwide. On June 11, 2009, WHO declared it a pandemic.

Influenza A virus has sixteen possible Hemagglutinin (HA) and nine possible Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins. HA facilitates viral attachment, while NA is involved in viral release. These proteins elicit immune responses that prevent infection or reduce viral replication.

The swine-origin H1N1 strain combines genetic material from human, swine, and avian influenza viruses, with additional pig H3N2 genes from Eurasia. Its distinct antigenic properties compared to seasonal H1N1 suggest limited human immunity, though older age groups may have partial protection.
