Target Information
The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and serves as a co-receptor for HIV. CD4 is primarily expressed in T helper lymphocytes but may also be found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells.
At the tissue level, CD4 expression can be detected in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and specific regions of the brain and gut.
It functions to initiate or augment early T-cell activation through association with the T-cell receptor complex and protein tyrosine kinase Lck.
CD4 may also act as a mediator of neuronal damage in infectious and immune-mediated CNS diseases.
Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified (RefSeq, July 2017).
