Target Information
SLC29A1 gene encodes a transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the equilibrative nucleoside transporter family. It localizes to plasma and mitochondrial membranes and mediates cellular uptake of nucleosides. This transporter is sensitive to inhibition by nitrobenzylthioinosine and is essential for nucleotide synthesis in cells lacking de novo synthesis pathways. It also facilitates uptake of cytotoxic nucleosides used in cancer and antiviral therapies. Multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
