Target Information
Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to catecholamines, including dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. This O-methylation serves as a major degradative pathway for catecholamine neurotransmitters.
COMT also plays an important role in the metabolism of catechol drugs used for hypertension, asthma, and Parkinson’s disease.
COMT exists in two forms in tissues: soluble (S-COMT) and membrane-bound (MB-COMT), differing at their N-termini. Several transcript variants are produced through alternative translation initiation and promoter usage.
