Target Information

The RAB8A protein belongs to the RAS superfamily of small GTP/GDP-binding proteins (~200 amino acids). Members of the RAB/YPT family are involved in protein transport between the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and plasma membrane.
RAB8A shares 97% similarity with dog RAB8, 96% with mouse MEL, and 51% with mouse YPT1 proteins. It contains four conserved GTP/GDP-binding sites typical of RAS proteins and a C-terminal CAAX motif common in the RAS superfamily but absent in most RAB proteins.
Although initially isolated as a transforming gene from a melanoma cell line, no direct link between MEL and malignant melanoma has been established. The gene is located 800 kb distal to MY09B on chromosome 19p13.1.
