In the nucleus, the RNA exosome complex is involved in:

• Maturation of stable RNA species (rRNA, snRNA, snoRNA)
• Elimination of RNA processing by-products and non-coding transcripts (e.g., antisense RNA, PROMPTs)
• Degradation of mRNAs with processing defects to prevent cytoplasmic export

In the cytoplasm, it functions in:

• General mRNA turnover
• Degradation of unstable mRNAs containing AU-rich elements (AREs)
• RNA surveillance pathways to prevent translation of aberrant mRNAs
• Degradation of histone mRNA
