Target Information
Sox genes comprise a family of genes related to the mammalian sex-determining gene SRY. These genes contain sequences encoding the HMG-box domain, responsible for sequence-specific DNA-binding activity. Sox genes encode putative transcriptional regulators implicated in cell fate decisions during development and in the control of various developmental processes.
The Sox gene family is complex, consisting of at least 40 different loci that have diverged across animal lineages. Approximately 30 Sox genes have been identified to date, conserved through evolution and playing key roles in animal development. Some Sox genes are involved in human diseases, including sex reversal.
