Background
Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein polymerase that maintains telomere ends by adding telomere repeat sequences (TTAGGG). The enzyme consists of a protein component with reverse transcriptase activity and an RNA template component. Telomerase expression is repressed in postnatal somatic cells, leading to telomere shortening and cellular senescence. Deregulation may contribute to oncogenesis. In mouse models, telomerase also participates in chromosomal repair, synthesizing telomere repeats at double-stranded breaks. Multiple alternatively spliced variants of telomerase reverse transcriptase have been identified.
