Background
The MCM6 protein is one of the highly conserved mini-chromosome maintenance (MCM) proteins essential for initiating eukaryotic genome replication. The hexameric MCM complex is a key component of the pre-replication complex (pre_RC) and is involved in replication fork formation and recruitment of other DNA replication-related proteins. The MCM complex (including MCM2, 4, 6, and 7) exhibits DNA helicase activity and may act as a DNA unwinding enzyme. Phosphorylation by CDC2 kinase reduces helicase activity, indicating a regulatory role in DNA replication. Polymorphisms in intron regions of this gene are associated with differential transcriptional activation of the neighboring lactase gene promoter.
