Background
Flavin-containing monooxygenase 3 (FMO3) is a key enzyme in the metabolism of xenobiotics, catalyzing NADPH-dependent oxygenation of nitrogen-, sulfur-, and phosphorus-containing compounds such as drugs, dietary substances, and pesticides. The human FMO gene family comprises five genes and multiple pseudogenes, with distinct developmental and tissue-specific expression patterns. FMO3, the major isoform expressed in adult liver, shows up to 20-fold variation among individuals, influencing the rate of xenobiotic metabolism. This transmembrane protein localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum of many tissues, and alternative splicing of this gene has been observed.
