Background
This gene encodes one of two neuropilins, which contain specific protein domains allowing participation in various signaling pathways controlling cell migration. Neuropilins include a large N-terminal extracellular domain composed of complement-binding, coagulation factor V/VIII, and meprin domains, a short membrane-spanning domain, and a small cytoplasmic domain. They bind multiple ligands and co-receptors, influencing cell survival, migration, and attraction. Ligands include vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and semaphorin family members. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described for this gene. [RefSeq, Oct 2011]
