Background
Branched-chain amino acid transaminase 1 (BCAT1) is the cytosolic form of the enzyme that catalyzes the reversible transamination of branched-chain α-keto acids to branched-chain L-amino acids, which are essential for cell growth. Defects in branched-chain amino acid transamination are linked to clinical disorders such as hypervalinemia and hyperleucine-isoleucinemia. A mitochondrial form of this enzyme also exists, and mutations in either gene can contribute to these disorders. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described.
