Background
Angiopoietins are members of the vascular endothelial growth factor family and are growth factors specific for vascular endothelium. Angiopoietin-1, -2, and -4 are involved in blood vessel formation. The protein encoded by this gene (ANGPTL1) is another angiopoietin family member, expressed widely in adult tissues, with highest mRNA levels in highly vascularized tissues. It is a secretory protein that does not act as an endothelial cell mitogen in vitro.
