Background
The protein encoded by this gene is the tropomyosin-binding subunit of the troponin complex, located on the thin filament of striated muscles. It regulates muscle contraction in response to changes in intracellular calcium ion concentration. Mutations in this gene are associated with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and dilated cardiomyopathy. Multiple tissue-specific isoforms exist due to alternative splicing, though some variants' full-length forms remain undetermined. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
