Background
Endothelial PAS domain protein 1 (EPAS1) is a transcription factor involved in the induction of genes regulated by oxygen levels. It is activated under hypoxic conditions and contains a basic-helix-loop-helix domain, a protein dimerization domain, and a PAS domain found in proteins involved in oxygen-sensing signal transduction pathways. Mutations in this gene are associated with familial erythrocytosis type 4.
