Background
Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of serine- and threonine-specific protein kinases activated by calcium and diacylglycerol. PKC family members phosphorylate diverse protein targets and are involved in various cellular signaling pathways. They also function as receptors for phorbol esters, a class of tumor promoters. Each PKC isoform shows distinct expression profiles and cellular roles. The PKC γ isoform is expressed specifically in the brain and spinal cord, localized to neurons, and is essential for neuronal functions such as long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). Knockout studies in mice suggest its involvement in neuropathological processes.
