Target Information
The ubiquitin (Ub) pathway involves three sequential enzymatic steps that facilitate the conjugation of Ub and Ub-like molecules to specific protein substrates.
- Activation: ATP-dependent activation of the Ub C-terminus by the E1 enzyme.
- Conjugation: Ub transferred to the E2 conjugating enzyme forming Ub-E2 complex.
- Ligation: E3 ligase catalyzes transfer of Ub from E2 to target protein substrate.
UBE2U (ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2U) is a 321 amino acid E2 enzyme that catalyzes covalent attachment of ubiquitin to other proteins. It exists as two alternatively spliced isoforms and is encoded by a gene located on human chromosome 1, which spans 260 million base pairs and contains over 3,000 genes.
