Target Information

Nucleocytoplasmic transport is a signal- and energy-dependent process that occurs through nuclear pore complexes in the nuclear envelope. Proteins containing a nuclear localization signal are imported via NLS import receptors (importin alpha and beta, also known as karyopherins). Importin alpha binds NLS-containing cargo, while importin beta docks the complex at the nuclear pore. In the presence of nucleoside triphosphates and Ran GTP-binding protein, the complex translocates into the nucleus, where importin subunits dissociate. Importin alpha delivers its cargo into the nucleoplasm, and importin beta remains at the pore. Interactions between importin beta and FG repeats of nucleoporins are essential for translocation. The gene encoding this protein belongs to the importin beta family.
