Target Information
SGMS1 is a bidirectional lipid cholinephosphotransferase capable of converting phosphatidylcholine (PC) and ceramide to sphingomyelin (SM) and diacylglycerol (DAG), and vice versa. The reaction direction depends on the relative concentrations of DAG and ceramide. It directly recognizes the choline head group on the substrate and requires two fatty chains on the choline-P donor molecule for efficient recognition. It may not function strictly as a sphingomyelin synthase and is inhibited by bacterial PC-phospholipase C inhibitor D609.
Localized to the Golgi apparatus membrane as a multi-pass membrane protein. Possibly expressed in brain, heart, kidney, liver, muscle, and stomach.
